PIER - CAYUCOS, CALIFORNIA
Cayucos is an Indian word that was applied to a
small canoe-like boat which was often covered with
skins. In 1867 a stage ran from San Luis Obispo to
here. In the early 1880's a stage ran to San Miguel
and returned once a week to connect with a weekly
boat. James Cass came to the area in 1867 and
built a large house here and because of his efforts
the settlement began to grow. In 1870 he built a
wharf here, soon after he built a store and ware-
house. The present pier is on the site of the one
built by Cass that was destroyed by storms ... M.P.
