POST CARD
Santos-Dumont of Brazil pioneered powered balloon
flights in Paris in 1898. Oct. 19, 1901 he won the
Deutsch prize of 100,000 francs by flying his #"6" from
St. Cloud, around the Eiffel Tower and back. On Sept.
13, 1906 he made the first airplane flight in Europe.
His pupil, Aida de Acosta, a true pioneer, flew his
airpship over Paris in 1903. ( See Honor Pioneers set

T.O.M. Sopwith soloed at Brooklands, Oct. 22, 1910.
He rated next to C. Grahame-White as top pilot for
1910 after setting a distance record, Eastchurch to
Thirimont, Belgium, which lasted for four years. (193
miles). He built the famed Sopwith planes of WWI.

Amelia Earhart pioneer aviatrix, flew solo across the
Atlantic, Newfoundland to Ireland, May 20-21, 1932.
She flew on Jan. 11, 1935 from Hawaii to California.
May 20, 1937 she started a world flight with navigator,
Fred Noonan. They were forced down and lost near
Howland Island..

POST CARD
CA 49 days 10 hours and the first Westsee Honor Pio
Calbraith P. Rodgers, first to fly across the U. S., flew
a Wright airplane called the "Vin Fizz" from Sheeps-
head Bay, N. Y., Sept. 17, 1911, to Los Angeles,
CA 49 days later, Nov.5 1911. Actual flying time
was 3 days, 10 hours and 14 minutes. Robert Fowler,
another Early Bird, made the first West to East crossing,
California to Florida, later in 1911. (See Honor Pione-
