The first flight by man with a motor-driven, heavier-
than-air machine was made by Orville Wright at Kitty
Hawk, NC on Dec. 17, 1903. He and his brother
Wilbur each made two flights that same day.

Orville Wright in Type-A at Fort Myer in 1908 made
first one-hour flight.

Lt. Frank P. Lahm, helmet in hand, led U.S. Army
group as first aviation unit at Ft. McKinley in the
Philippine Islands in 1912, with Wright Type C plane
which Lt. Lahm piloted. Lt. Lahm, later Brig. Gen.
was the first army officer taught to fly by the Wright
brothers.

their Dayton, Ohio home were joined by polar explorer,
Vilhjalmur Stefansson, and British balloonist and plane
builder, Oswald Short of Short Brothers Aviation Co.
