Admiral 's wife, center, and his son Comdr. R. E. Byrd,
Jr, in background, assisted him with many projects
culminating in the preparations for the Antarctic Treaty.

NORGE
The airship, "NORGE" with explorers Capt. Roald
Amundsen (Nor.), Lincoln Ellsworth (U.S.) and Umberto
Nobile (Italy) (pilot), made a successful crossing from
Spitsbergen to Teller, Alaska, on May 12, 1926, the
first by airship.

Stamp of Sweden honors, S. A. Andree, engineer, who
developed a plan for crossing the north polar region by
balloon. With 2 companions he took off from
Spitsbergen, July 11, 1897; they lost their lives in this
early polar balloon mission.
