BRIDGEPORT, CALIFORNIA
Mono County (corruption of Monache, a name
applied to Indians of the area) was formed in 1861
of land taken from Calaveras and Fresno counties.
Bridgeport became the county seat when it was
found, in 1863, that Aurora, the county seat, was
located in the state of Nevada. The town grew
prosperous from the mines to the east. Today with
the low price of metal and high wages the town
has turned to farming and tourist trade. Some of
the best hunting and fishing in the west is found in
and around Bridgeport ... M.P.
