Additional Details:
Named for Bishop Creek that in turn was named for Samuel A. Bishop, a Fort Tejon Stockman, who drove the first herd of cattle into the valley in 1861. The first structure in the present Bishop area was a blacksmith shop set up in a building hauled from Owensville in late 1864. Most of the land was swampy. The first church east of the Sierras was built in 1869 by Rev. Andrew Clark and was named Gospel Swamp. With plenty of water and good soil Bishop became a prosperous ranching community. The upper Bishop Creek extends into the back country of over 200 lakes, its waters drop at the rate of 400 feet per mile. Power plants line the creek banks, the first was built in 1904 and had the worlds longest transmission line to Tonopah, Nev.
