REFLECTIONS COLORADO RIVER MARINA
Needles, California
Today Marinas dot the shore of the great Colorado
River where once paddle wheel steamers puffed up
and down the river. Today water skiers slide over
the waters that once flooded into the ocean now
used to irrigate the great southwest. So far as is
known Hernando de Alarcon and his men were the
first white men to see the river in 1540. The river,
first called Rio del Tizon (River of Firebrand) carried
almost all the traffic in the southwest until the com-
ing of the railroads. Yuma was a great shipping
point where ocean going boats discharged their car-
goes into the shallow draft steamers that steamed
up the Colorado. Needles today is one of the great
water-sport centers along the Colorado ... M.P.
