Lone Pine, California
The first cabin to be built on Lone Pine Creek was
in 1861, two years later a good size settlement had
sprung up. On March 26, 1872 a severe earthquake
shook the Owens Valley. Land dropped as much as
12 feet, twenty-six people were killed in the quake,
twenty-one of them were buried in a single grave, a
short distance north of town along the present high-
way. Mt. Whitney, (El. 14,495 ft., highest point in the
49 states) is located west of town along with the
Alabama hills, location for a great number of motion
pictures . . . M.P.
