This boat was hand hewed by members of the
Yurok Indian tribe of the Klamath River area in
Northern California from one of the oldest living
things on the face of the earth – the redwood
trees. This tree was approximately 2700 years
old and had 80,000 board feet of lumber-enough
to build about seven modern bungalons. The log
from which the boat was made measured 13 feet
in diameter, and one-half of this log is being
presented to you in boat form. Boats of this type
were commonly used on the Klamath River for
many purposes.
This boat was built in 1932, taking nine months
for completion. It measures 26 feet in length,
has a six foot beam, and can carry 25 passengers
with ease.
