THE PALOMAR OBSERVATORY
70 miles northeast of San Diego and
130 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
At the left may be seen the 48" Dome, and at
the right the 18" Dome, both housing Schmidt type
telescopes. Center shows the gigantic Dome for
the 200“ telescope, the largest in the world. This
Dome is 138 feet high and 138 feet in diameter.
The rotating part (painted aluminum) weighs two
million pounds and requires only 20 h.p. for ro-
tation. The telescope, weighing over one million
pounds, is so delicately balanced that a fraction
of one horsepower will be sufficient for operation.
