O'CONNELL STREET, LIMERICK CITY: The city
of Limerick stands on the site of an important ford of
ancient times, where the Shannon River meets the sea.
It is one of the most progressive of Irish cities, an
important transport and industrial centre. The history
of Limerick dates from the middle of the ninth century,
when the Danes made a settlement here. In the twelfth
century the Anglo-Normans took over and succeeding
centuries saw them or the Irish in control.
