28. DIFFICULTIES OF HUNTING ELEPHANTS.
At a first glance one might almost think these men
were trout fishing, but they are engaged in a much
more dangerous sport. They are hunting the ele-
phant, the largest and most dangerous of all the
jungle beasts. In many places the undergrowth is so
thick that the hunters find it easier to use the bed
of a stream, as you see them doing in this picture.
If an elephant charges when the hunter is in the water,
it is a case of killing the monster at first shot or
losing one's life.
