FIGHTING THE POLAR ICE
By ANTHONY FIALA Commander of the
fi
m, Ziegler-Fiala Polar Expedition.
With 160 illustrations from photographs by the Author and 8 plates in colour. Price 16/= net.
This book might also be called a “Guide to the Pole,” it shows so clearly what is necessary to accomplish this greatest of
all exploring feats. It is the record of two years spent above the 81st parallel by the second Ziegler Polar Expedition, and it is in
many respects the most significant book on the subject since Nansen's. It is safe to say that, between the remarkable photographs
and the author's vivid writing, nothing in print gives a reader a more real conception of what an Arctic explorer's life means and
what the conditions are which he has to overcome. Mr. Fiala's experiments with ponies in place of dogs are very suggestive, and
his unassuming narrative of his experiences between November, 1903, when the America was crushed in the ice, and July, 1905,
when the second relief expedition reached him, shows him to have the qualities of a born leader.
