The first cannery in Monterey was built in 1895, canning mostly salmon. In the 25 year “hey day” of Cannery Row, the sardine industry grew to a fantastic worth of 22 million dollars. In 1946 the sardines disappeared from Monterey. Now fine restaurants, shops and boutiques can be found on "The Row.”
