C100—THE CARMELITE MONASTERY
Since 1931 this beautiful edifice in
Carmel's southern outskirts has been a
world out of this world for a group of
Discalced (barefoot) Carmelite Nuns
whose rules demand poverty, seclusion,
silence and labor from its members.
The order derives its name from a
mendicant group of Catholic monks
established in 1156 on Mount Carmel
in Palestine, of which it is an out-
growth; and not from the neighboring
village of Carmel.
