OLD WALKER HOUSE, CONCORD, N. H.
Built in the years 1788-84, this pleasant old mansion is the
oldest house between Haverhill, on the Merrimac, and the
Canadian boundary. The grand old elms, standing so vigor-
ously before it, were planted in the year 1756. Appointed a
garrison house in 1789, during the French and Indian Wars,
and assigned as the rendezvous for nine families. At that
time it was protected by a high stockade of timbers. Here
were the offices of the first New Hampshire Legislature, 1782.
A fine, well-preserved mansion of the Colonial period.
