The arch of Spanish tybe used in building the
California Missions, is a fitting back-ground forthe
erest of the Inn. The design of the bell supported by
thongs in the rude frame, surmounted by the rustic
ancient cross of the Indians, is the Glenwood house-
mark. The figure in the profile is St. Francis of Assissi
the patron saint of the Inn, and the founder of the
Franciscan order of Monks. One of the greatest of the
Spanish Franciscans, Father Junipere Serra, built the
missions in California in the eighteenth century. Below
the shield is the figure of the Indian for whose salvation
these missions were established at great expense and
sacrifice. Through the symbols of the cross and
bell these good fathers taught their Christian faith
to the redman.
