Barstow is a junction point on the Santa Fe, 10
one line running to Los Angeles and Southern Cali- 400
fornia, the other across Tehachapi Pass and through 1913
the San Joaquin Valley, the granary of the state,CAL
to San Francisco. At Barstow begins the gradual
ascent up Cajon Pass towards Los Angeles.
The altitude of Barstow is 2105 feet. The
summit of Cajon Pass, fifty-six miles away, has
an altitude of 3,820 feet, then there is a drop to
1077 feet, twenty-five miles farther on.
