Unusual erection procedure of Pope
Bridge in Napa hills, California, con-
sisted of cantilevering welded plate
girders over piers, then raising girders
from valley floor with the aid of a
guy-derrick poised on the end of the
cantilever. Engineers thus avoided
using falsework in steeper slopes of
the Canyon. The Pope and its neigh-
boring Putah Creek highway bridges
were fabricated and erected by Beth-
lehem Pacific. The structures which
span 165-foot deep valleys were de-
signed by the Bridge Department of
the California Division of Highways
for the County of Napa. The General
Contractor was John C. Gist Co. of
Sacramento. Hanging in mid-air is a
37-ton welded plate girder fabricated
at the Alameda Works of
