"This is important," continued Mr. Pickwick,
starting up. "This is some very old inscription, exist-
ing perhaps long before the ancient almshouses in
this place." The Pickwick Papers, Chapter XI.
The almshouses are twenty in number, and were
founded in the reign of Queen Elizabeth on the Site
of an older college or chantry, of which some few
fragments yet remain.
