THE USS NAVY NUCLEAR SUBMARINE NAUTILUS (SSN-571)
The USS NAUTILUS, the world's first nuclear powered ship, was manu-
factured by the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corpora-
tion. The reactor which powers the submarine was developed for the Navy's
Bureau of Ships and the Atomic Energy Commission by the Westinghouse
Company and recently completed over 60,000 miles of continuous operation
without refueling. The NAUTILUS is approximately 300 ft. long and is
capable of speeds of over 20 knots submerged. The NAUTILUS is currently
operating with elements of the U. S. Fleet.
