About the stamp: The stamp was issued as the first of a set of three
commemoratives to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Battles of Lexington
and Concord, Massachusetts, the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War. The
battles took place April 19, 1775. Shown is a view of the military formation
which took place later at nearby Cambridge upon the occasion of General
George Washington assuming command, at the direction of the Continental
Congress, of the American Army.
