George Dewey, Admiral of United States Navy,
born in 1837 at Montpelier, Va.; appointed to
Naval Academy from Vermont in 1854 and
graduated therefrom in 1858. After serving
successfuly with great distinction in the
Naval Department through the Civil War he
was commissioned Lieut.-Commander in 1865
and served successfuly on the Steamer Kear-
sarge, and was commissioned Commander in
1872. In 1898 assumed command of the Asi-
atic Station. He distinguished himself in the
Battle of Manila by emerging victoriously
without the loss of a single man; was com-
missioned Rear Admiral of the United States
Navy in 1898..
