A Navy Mariner seaplane is a fitting background to these
signs which greet visitors to the Norfolk (Va.) Naval Air
Station, one of the world's greatest aviation bases and an
essential part of America's system of national defense. This
busy seaport-industrial airport is headquarters for several
major Naval Aviation commands including the Com-
mander, Second Fleet and the Commander, Air Force,
Atlantic Fleet; it operates one of the busiest airports in the
world averaging 12,000 landings or takeoffs each month;
it has one of the largest aircraft overhaul and repair depots
in the world; and it ships supplies and rebuilt, modified
Navy planes to naval air units throughout the Atlantic,
Mediterranean, and Caribbean waters.
