LOCATION-CRYSTAL CAVE is located near Kutztown,
17 miles east of Reading, 22 miles west of Allentown, along
Route 222. People traveling on Route 22 should turn south at
Krumsville or Lenhartsville, direct to property.
DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT – The cave was dis-
covered, November 12, 1871, by a group of workmen pros-
pecting for limestone where the entrance to the cave is
located. THE NATURAL BEAUTY of the cave has been
carefully preserved. CONCRETE WALKS, STEEL RAILINGS
and an INDIRECT ELECTRIC LIGHTING SYSTEM have
been installed so that the beauty and wonder of the cave may
be explored with every assurance of safety and comfort.
GEOLOGY - According to scientists, these caverns were
formed during the teritary period, more than a million years
ago. Geologists have studied the formations because of the
large variety of unique and colorful stalagmite, flowstone and
crystal formations. It has been estimated that they were
formed at the rate of about one cubic inch in 300 to 500 years.
GENERAL INFORMATION -- The Cave grounds comprise
an area of 135 acres. A Free Picnic Park and facilities are
maintained for the enjoyment of visitors. New State Roads
now lead directly to the property. Contact any Auto Club for

routes. Camping close by.
Famous Crystal Cave is open beginning February 15th to
December 1st each day at convenient hours – 9:00 A.M. to
5:00 P.M. During summer season, property is open to 7:00 PM.

The attraction is closed to visitors December 1st to February
15th.
