CATACOMBS OF SAINT CALLISTUS
SALESIANI DI DON BOSCO
Via Appia Antica, 110 - ROMA - Tel. 70.485
“Whoever enters those holy places (the cata-
mbs) experiences an emotion that remains never
be forgotten for all one's life long: and thus
was that Don Bosco was enwrapted in sweet and
holy thoughts whilst traversing those underground
passages, where the first christians, in assisting at
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, with the prayers
said in common, with the singing of the psalms
and prophecies, with the reception of Holy Com-
munion, and in listening attentively to the preach-
ing of the bishops and popes had found the neces-
sary strength for enduring the martyrdom that
'vaited them. It is almost impossible to gase with
vyes that are not dimmed with tears on those loculi
which have held the nangled and bloodstained
corpses of so many heroes of the faith: on those
tombs of well nigh fourteen popes who have given
their lives testifying to the doctrine that they
tought. There too is the crypt of Saint Cecilia.”
