Incorporated December 28, 1993, the Institute of
American Deltiology is a private foundation and
research center for the study, display and use of
picture postcards as documents of American
history and culture. The Institute's collections were
begun by Donald R. Brown during the 1940s. They
have been augmented by a library of books,
journals, newspaper clippings and slides. The IAD
is housed in a modified classical revival structure
in the vernacular built in 1848-1849 by Thomas
Bassler, an entrepreneur along Pennsylvania's
Union Canal.
