EL DORADO COUNTY FAIR GROUNDS -
El Dorado (Sp. for "The Guided One" later known
as a place where gold is found) County Fair is
held near the town of Placerville (Hangtown). One
of the attractions is the wheelbarrow race. It was
John Studebaker who discovered that by off-setting
the spokes of the wheel at the hub greater strength
was given it. From 1853 to 58 Studebaker stuck to
his trade making better wheelbarrows later to buy
out an automobile plant that he had been distributor
for while building wagons and buggies. Studebakers
shop was located at the present 545 Main Street
where he worked as a wheelwright and made his
name so well known in the transportation field ...
