SUTTER CREEK, CALIFORNIA
Sutter Creek, named after Gen. John Augustus Sutter,
is located on Highway 49. Many of the mine owners
were ruined financially because of the high cost to
drive tunnels and shafts through solid rock. Alvinza
Hayward went broke several times but he always
kept on until his Central Eureka became one of the
best producers along with a mine, Lincoln Mine,
owned by Leland Stanford. Along the hill-sides are
scattered dumps from the quartz mines. ..M.P.
