JAMES J. CORBETT
The first of American champions to win
the title with boxing gloves. Corbett won
the title from John L. Sulivan in 1892 at
New Orleans, defeating the Boston gladia-
tor in the 21st round for a purse of $25,000
and $20,000 stake money. Five-ounce gloves
were used and Marquis of Queensbury rules
prevailed. Corbett fought Charley Mitchell
of England for the international title in
1895 at Jacksonville, Fla., stopping the
British star in three rounds. Since leaving
tue ring Mr. Corbett has made good on the
stage and with the movies. His record
