Family: Thunnidae
400 pounds. It is usually distinguished from Thun-
nus thynnus by its yellow fin, from which it is com-
monly termed “yellow-fin tuna." As a sport fish
Neothunnus macropterus ranks on a par with the
blue-fin tuna, and is caught usually by trolling with
a flying fish, held aloft by a kite, as bait. The com-
mercial catch is the third largest in the state of
California and the majority is used for canning,
although some is sold in the fresh fish market.

This representative of the Thunnidae is widely dis-
tributed and is found in the Indian and Pacific
Oceans, as well as the Japan Sea. The largest speci-
mens measure more than 62 feet and weigh some
