The Veteran's Cry
At my camp fire, sad and lonely,
Backward turn my thoughts tonight,
On that story of Old Glory and on the
Noble boys that fought, yes, they fought
To save Old Glory with a soul of strength and might.
And to show to all Nations,
Let them be black, brown or white.
Tho' the veterans' forms are bent
And their hair is snowy white,
We permit no dictation and no insult
To the Stars and Stripes;
For we have left our sons and daughters
To be ready at the Nation's call,
And in trouble they will be ready
To start along with the bugle's call;
For the veteran's cry will ever be
Oh, God! protect our flag and keep this nation free.
Ah, what do we hear! The veteran's cry so near,
Sons and daughters true, we leave that work for you
to do-
That not a rent, or tear shall mar
That flag that laid us here.
Tho' it be party, creed, or crowned head,
It matters not, for the veteran's cry will ever be
Oh, God! protect our flag and keep this nation free.
