Edgar Allan Poe was born at Boston, January 19th,
1809. At the age of three, being an orphan, he was
adopted by John Allan a wealthy merchant who
brought him to England in 1815. He was at first
educated at a school in Stoke Newington, a suburb of
London, and lastly, having returned to America, at the
University of Virginia. He enlisted in 1827, and rose
to be Sergeant Major of Artillery, but procured his
discharge in 1829. Except for the wonderful writings
which he left behind him his life was a failure. His
poem “The Raven” gained him immortality, while
his prose stories in their way are no less extraordinary.
He died in misery on October 7th, 1849, at the early
age of forty.
