OLD CUSTOM HOUSE
To most people, the Old Custom House in
Monterey is the most interesting building on
the Pacific Coast. In the earliest days, it was
not only used for conduct of Royal business,
but it was the social center for Spanish aristo-
crats. Here beneath the Spanish Flag, press-
ing matters of state were settled and gala
balls were held. The upper end was built in
1814 by the Spaniards. The center section
was built by the Mexicans when they had
wrested independence from Spain. On July
7th, 1846, Commodore John Drake Sloat raised
the American flag over the building, and the
lower end of the custom house was added on
by the Americans. It is along Adobe building
and stands near the shore of Monterey Bay.
