World's longest bridge - 7.1 miles long; spans San Francisco Bay from San Mateo to Mt. Eden; cost $7,500,000; monolithic construction, except for five steel spans (300 feet each) across deep water channel. Central span is a lift span, giving a clearance of 135 feet when raised, to allow vessels to pass. It reduces automobile travel between San Francisco and Central and Southern California points by thirty minutes.
