DISRAELI
(BORN IN LONDON 1804. - DIED IN LONDON 1881).
Disraëli was a celebrated English author and statesman and be-
came first clerk of a notary. He started in 1826 in litterature as a
journalist. He has during three years visited Greece, Spain and
Egypt. On his return to England. Disraëli took his seat in Parlia-
ment in 1857. Ten years later he became the only head of the Pro-
tectionists. When the administration of Lord Russell was in disor-
der, he entered the Derby ministry and became a chancellor. In
1868 Disraëli came once more into power, which he had again to
give up to Lord Gladstone and then again become a statesman, he
could confer on the Queen of England the title of an Empress of
India, assure England the possession of the Suëz-canal and buy the
isle of Cyprus from the Turks for the English. Disraëli has received
the title of Lord Beaconsfield as a reward for his services.
