Emperor Norton, "Emperor of the United States and Pro.
tector of Mexico"-the glorification of human vagaries,
is the central figure. He is holding one of his oft.
published proclamations. Sheets of his script, honored
by the banks, flutter about "Blummer" and "Lazarus,"
the well-known dog actors. To the Emperor's left appears
Bret Harte shielding his "Heathen Chinee"; and behind
him the "Great Unknown," the mysterious boulevardier
of the Sixties. Still further left is Mark Twain with his
celebrated Jumping Frog. At the right two fashionable
San Franciscans are slumming at Warner's Cobweb Palace.
A mushroom-shaped balloon" streetcar is seen taking
people to a balloon ascension at Woodward's Garden.
In the background is the Cliff House, and under full sail
"Glory of the Seas" arrives after an incredibly short trip
of only ninety-four days from New York.
