STATUE OF JOHN MCLAREN
John McLaren became Superintendent of
Parks for San Francisco in 1890 and car-
ried on the work of transforming a thous-
and acres of drifting sands into the mar-
velously beautiful and world-famous
Golden Gate Park. For half a century he,
built, gardened and brought plants and
trees from every corner of the earth and is
created that vast assemblage of play-
grounds, conservatories, special gardens, a
lakes and fountains that make it what it
is today. This statue of John McLaren, in
spired gardener, surrounded by the color
ful blooms of rhododendron is a tribute to -
his great work.
The John McLaren Park is being devel-
oped as a memorial in his honor.
