PEARY
Robert E.Peary was born at Cresson
Pa May 6 1858. Was eaducated in
private schools and graduated from
Bowdoin College in 1877 Has served
in the US.Navy as engineer and has
now the rank of Commander.He made
his first jourmey North in l886, others
followed in 1891, 1893-4, 1896, 1898
1902, (During which he lost &8 toes)and
1905-6. Heleft NewYork, on his last
trip July 81908, by rail, for Sydney
CB.where he embărked on his spec-
ially built steamer Roosevelt. After
wintering in the ice flow, he made
his dash for the Pole over the ice
early in the spring reaching the goal
of his life's ambition April 6,1909
