FORT ROCK OF PEMAQUID
Longfellow called Plymouth Rock“The Corner
Stone of a Nation,” so this may be termed “The
Foundation Rock of a Nation.” Visited by English
Colonists 13 years before the Pilgrims landed at
Plymouth. Three nations have contended about it
for supremacy on this continent. The only spot in
the United States where four forts have been erected
and destroyed, and the first fort in the U. S. taken
by bombshell.
Here remain the foundation of the first stone fort
built in New England. The old fort Cache, buried
Paved Streets, remains of Ancient Wharf, and over
300 Walled Cellars buried within a gunshot of the
“Old Rock” are of interest to all visitors. 09 13
Old Fort House is about 200 years old.
