“Breaking the Ice” is the Cal Poly Universities' 39th entry in
the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's
Day. The float depicts a playful group of penguins who are
surprised and delighted when they encounter a curious sub-
marine emerging from the icy blue depths of the Antarctic.
After "breaking the ice," both penguins and submarine enjoy
amusing each other and continue their “fun and games”
together. The float is entirely designed, built and decorated by
students from the two campuses of Pomona and San Luis
Obispo with materials being donated by businesses.
