PIER — PISMO BEACH
This pier was built in 1925 by W. W. Ward at a cost of
$120,000. The original pier was 1750 feet long. A 1926
storm completely wrecked the outer end of the structure.
The town of Pismo was founded in 1891 being part of
Rancho Pizmo. Pismo gets its name from an Indian word,
PISMU, meaning tar. Long before the white man came to the
Pacific coast oil seeped up from the ocean to make large
tar deposits along the beach. The Indians used this to coat
their boats. . . M.P.
