Upon this spot, the 23rd day of
September, 1780, the British spy,
Major John Andre, was captured by
John Paulding, David Williams
and Isaac Van Wart.
After the meeting of Arnold and
Andre in the "Joshua Hett Smith
House," on Treason Hill, Haver.
straw, Andre crossed the Hudson
and proceeded down the east bank
to this point where he was halted
by three men. He mistook them
for British soldiers and, approach-
ing, said: "I am a British subject.
I have a passport-help me through
the lines.” The men searched
him, found nothing, and were
about to let him go when Paulding
said: "Boys, take off his boots."
Thus were found the papers telling
of Benedict Arnold's
treachery.
