Officials, from mayor to firemen, never slept for two days and two nights. Every
minute seemed an hour. When the fire was over the relief was that of the sinking
swimmer who feels his feet touching bottom. Then the firemen fell asleep without
regard to where they lay and without feeling the want of a pillow.--Collier's Weekly.
