JAMES BUCHANAN was born in Franklin Co.,
Pennsylvania on April 23, 1791. He was the candidate of
the Democratic party and pro-slavery and received 174 electoral
votes while his anti-slavery opponent received 114. His ad
ministration was a stormy one owing to the agitation of the
slavery question. He died June 1, 1868.

FRANKLIN PIERCE was born in Hillsborough, N. H.
on Nov. 23, 1804, and at the age of 49 years was inaugurated
President. He was a candidate of the Democratic party, but
his election was almost unanimous, only four states casting their
electoral votes against him. He died Oct. 8, 1869.

MILLARD FILLMORE was born at Summer Hill,
Cayuga Co., New York on Jan. 7, 1800. He had been the
Whig candidate for Vice-President elected with President Taylor,
and after the sudden death of the latter, filled out the term,
serving for two years and eight months. He died on March 8,
1874.

on Nov. 24, 1784, and as a result of the ſame which he gained
during the Mexican War, was nominated by the Whig party
and elected. He served for one year and four months wheu
he died on July 9, 1850.

JAMES K. POLK was born in Mecklenburg Co., North
Carolina on Nov. 2, 1795. He was nominated by the Democratic
party and elected by a majority in the popular vote of about
40,000. The Mexican War occurred during his administration.
He died June 15, 1849.

JOHN TYLER was born in Charles City Co., Virginia
ou March 29, 1790. Although a Democrat, he was elected
Vice-President with Harrison, and upon the death of the latter
one month after assuming office, he served out the term as
President. While a member of the Congress of the Confederate
States during the Civil War, he died at Richmond, Va. Jan. 17,
1862.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON was born in
Berkeley, Va. on Feb. 9, 1773, but was elected from Ohio.
He was nominated by the Whig party and received 234 electoral
votes out of 304. His death occurred on April 4, 1841, one
month after his inauguration, and he was the first President
to die in office.

MARTIN VAN BUREN was born in a small town on
the banks of the Hudson River on Dec. 5, 1782. He was
nominated by the Democratic party and elected by a handsome
majority. A financial panic, unprecedented in its disastrous
results, swept the country during his administration. He died
July 24, 1862.

President since Washington. He died June 8, 1845.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS was born in Quincy, Mass.
on July 11, 1767, and was elected by the House of
Representatives, none of the Presidential candidates having a
majority in the Electoral College. After retiring as President,
he was elected to the House of Representatives, and fell dead
on Feb. 21, 1848 as he rose to make an address to the House.

JAMES MONROE was born in Virginia on April 28, 1758.
He was elected by a large majority by the Republican party
which at this time changed its name to Democratic. On his
re-election he received 231 of the 232 electoral votes. He
promulgated the famous “Monroe Doctrine.' He died July
4, 1831.

administration. He died June 28, 1836.

Virginia on April 2, 1743. He was elected by the Jeffersonian
or Democratic (then called Republican) party which he founded,
and was re-elected almost unanimously. The “Louisiana
Purchase" which gave to the United States the great empire
beyond the Mississippi was made during his administration.
He died July 4, 1826.
