Additional Details:
Burlington RR Souvenir of Pioneer Locomotive and First Railway Mail Car. Engine 35 - Pride of the Prairies, vintage 1882, rolled up an incredible mileage in its day and is still in perfect running condition. The little Mail Car is a replica of one in which on July 28, 1862, enroute from West Quincy to St. Joseph, Missouri, over what is now a part of the Burlington main line from Chicago to Kansas City and St. Joseph, United States Mail was first sorted while in transit. The purpose was to speed the departure of the overland stage coach from St. Joseph to California. This was the forerunner of the present-day Railway Mail Service.
