“PHILADELPHIA.”
Girard College. Girard College was founded by the
will of Stephen Girard, for the support and education of
“poor white male orphans.” The corner-stone was laid
July 4th, 1833, and the building opened January ist, 1848.
The original edifice is an imposing structure, Corinthian
in style, and is in feet wide, 169 feet long, and the total
height is 97 feet. Numerous other buildings have since
been added.
