Engine No. 3000, recently built in the
Santa Fe's Topeka shops, is the largest
steam locomotive in the world. Others
of the same size and type are building
there. By comparison with other Mallet
Locomotives it is some twenty feet longer
and has four more driving wheels and
weighs 150,000 pounds more. The Mal-
let principle permits the taking of a per-
fectly good modern locomotive and ad-
ding to it a similar unit or section con-
sisting of a boiler, steam cylinders and
driving wheels all operated by one engi-
neer and one fireman.
