"Los Portales'' has figured in New Mexico history since
the 1880's with reference to the Portales Springs some 6
miles southeast of the City. Billy the Kid was supposed
to have used this natural spring as a camp site for opera-
tions and a hide-a-way. This modern Post Office faces
the Court House square and central business district.
