Visitors to picturesque and distinctive Charles-
ton, with its old world atmosphere, carry with
them the memory of impressive buildings, grace-
ful spires, beautiful gardens and the delicate
wrought iron gateways, with their beautiful and
intricate designs which are famous in Charleston.
These iron gateways, with their filmy tracery,
show individual characteristics. The ironsmiths
who made them developed their art to perfec-
tion. Much of the work was hand hammered by
slave labor.
